For business owners, the acquisition of new computer equipment often means the replacement / displacement of old equipment. Once the new
computer equipment is up and running smoothly, it leaves the old computer with information still left on it, as well as old peripheral
equipment, media and manuals which need to be safely and responsibly dealt with.
At the end of a computer's life there is going to be data and valuable information left on all sorts of old media such as floppy disks,
tapes, zip disks, CDs, manuals and old hard drives that will be required to be collected,
sorted, recognized and responsibly dealt with. The
data, valuable information and media it is stored on will be required to be retained, backed-up, or destroyed
... and responsibly disposed of.
It is important for managers to recognize decommissioning is part of the computer removal process
- it is the first step. You can not
dispose of a company computer [scrap, sell, give away, or trade in] without first making sure all the data is removed from it and dealt
with appropriately (backed-up or destroyed, and properly stored or disposed of).
Decommissioning Computers Requires Different Tasks Related to Pre-Disposal Treatment of Data:
* Secure Media (Hard Drive & Computer Disks) Removal Service
* Secure Media (Hard Drive & Computer Disks) Destruction Service
* Media (Hard Drive & Computer Disks) Transfer and Conversion Service (if
required)
* Pre-Removal Data Backup Service (if required for regulatory reasons)
* Data Transfer Service (if required)
* Data Destruction Service
* Computer Documentation Shredding and Destruction Service
* Computer & Peripherals Removal Service
* Computer & Peripherals Disposal Support
Before releasing the equipment from active business use and scraping, selling, giving away, or trading in the equipment, one needs to
engage in equipment marking and documentation to confirm they have been decommissioned; they are identified as out of service - non
active computers; and once removed from the business premises, they will not being mistaken for stolen computers.
Businesses now have an environmental responsibility, which means that computer equipment needs to be properly disposed of through the
appropriate waste disposal facilities which are able to handle hazardous materials, or
the appropriate scrap/recycling facilities.
